How to Become a YMCA Official

Steps for Becoming A Certified YMCA Swim Official

Once you have taken the course referenced in the above link, you will learn by shadowing an experienced official by apprenticeship on the pool deck.

How to Become a USA Swimming Official

USA Swimming now has a standardized, online training program for prospective stroke and turn officials and prospective admin officials (both are entry level positions). People looking to become a USA Swimming official for the first time need to:

• Register as a member of USA Swimming, with the role of Official.
• Complete background check, athlete protection, and concussion training.
• Complete the online Foundations of Officiating and Stroke and Turn clinic, both of which can be found at: https://university.usaswimming.org/landing
• Complete four on-deck apprentice sessions shadowing an experienced stroke and turn judge.
• Send completed apprentice session documentation to njsofficials.advancement@gmail.com

NOTE: As of 10/1, current Stroke and Turn judges interested in advancing to the Starter role can take the Starter clinic and test online as well. You can find more detailed info, as well as the NJS starter apprenticeship documentation, via https://www.njswim.org/page/unofficials/becoming-an-official under “Starter.”

NOTE: USA Swimming membershios for dual certified officials (YMCA ad USA Swimming) will be paid for by the GSCY Parent Committee.

Volunteering as a GSCY Official

To volunteer as an official (as well as apprentice official) you must sign up in the job portal. These will be sent out prior to each meet. After the meet you will be awarded the volunteer points. Any questions regarding volunteer points, please contact gscystormvolunteers@gmail.com.
